2025 First Responder Academy: A Week of Impact and Inspiration
The 14th Annual Urban Leadership Institute concluded with tremendous success, as Utica high school students completed an intensive week of hands-on learning and career exploration in emergency services. From August 18-22, 2025, participants gained unprecedented access to the world of first responders, building leadership skills while discovering meaningful career pathways in public safety.
Throughout the week, students engaged with multiple municipal departments and agencies, gaining comprehensive insight into the interconnected nature of emergency services:
Oneida County Department of Emergency Services provided students with an understanding of coordinated emergency response and disaster preparedness protocols.
Utica City Court offered participants a behind-the-scenes look at the judicial system and its role in community safety.
Utica Police Department delivered immersive experiences including crime scene investigation scenarios, allowing students to apply critical thinking and analytical skills in realistic situations.
Utica Fire Department gave students hands-on training opportunities and insight into fire safety, rescue operations, and emergency medical response.
Oneida County Probation & Cityscape introduced participants to community-based corrections and rehabilitation programs.
Beyond career exploration, the Academy emphasized essential leadership competencies through targeted program activities. Students strengthened their communication, decision-making, and teamwork abilities while learning from experienced professionals who demonstrated these skills in high-stakes environments.
