The 15th Annual Urban Leadership Institute, a summer program for Utica high school students, ran from August 17-27, 2026, and introduced students to first responder careers. Students worked with local agencies to get a close look at how emergency services work, and they built leadership and teamwork skills along the way. 

Through hands-on activities with each partner agency, students strengthened their communication, problem-solving, and teamwork while learning alongside experienced professionals who apply these skills under pressure. Students also gained a clearer understanding of how public safety agencies work together and the paths available for pursuing a career in the field.

Who Students Worked With

• Maynard Fire Department: Students tried on firefighter gear and practiced rescues, fire truck safety, and emergency medical care.
• Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC): Students took part in classes, learned about equipment basics, and watched a K-9 demonstration.
• Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) EMS Education Department: Students practiced CPR and other first-aid skills, including wound care and administering epinephrine auto-injectors (EpiPens).
• Oneida County Sheriff’s Department: Students met deputies, toured armored rescue vehicles, and familiarized themselves with specialized tactical equipment.
• Root Farm: Students spent time outdoors with animals and nature, and did activities that helped them trust and work with each other.
