Student Engagement Specialist Duties:

  • Work with school districts (Holland Patent and Adirondack), the county, and other interested parties, as identified, to provide targeted services to at-risk students in collaboration with the Family Engagement Coordinator when appropriate.
  • Monitor student cases through district databases and at a minimum weekly contact with school personnel (teachers, social workers, nurse, guidance counselor and/or administration) for case updates.
  • Participate in school/district team meetings to identify, discuss, and coordinate services for referred youth
  • Work with school teams to identify appropriate at-risk students for agency identified programs as needed.
  • Responsible to collaborate with the School Based Interdisciplinary Team.
  • Provide support between the county, Family Engagement Coordinators and schools as needed to divert inappropriate referrals to the County.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with school staff and administration, as well as community-based agencies for additional services to students/families.
  • Ensure programs are provided with fidelity to the prescribed evidence-based model programs we use and provide each service as outlined by the agency.
  • Provide services to students (and families when needed) on school campuses or in the home as needed (for example when schools are closed due to vacations, holidays, or if a student is not coming to school, etc.).
  • Maintain contact with assigned Family Engagement Coordinators to discuss service delivery and additional case updates, weekly contact for all open preventative cases is expected at a minimum.
  • Complete all required reports and documentation accurately and completely at least week or as needed.
  • Collect data needed to meet the objectives and goals of the services and report out on program forms.
  • Create and maintain a knowledge base of community-based services for children and families.
  • Create and develop assessment/service plans with students as needed, and work with community partners to support the child’s success in the established plans, especially the Family Engagement Coordinators.
  • Attend all community based and school-based meetings as required.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the Community Engagement Coordinator to engage the child and family in Family Engagement activities in the community (i.e., Impact Center) with a focus on normative experiences to support pro social behaviors, recreational, or other positive activities.
  • Use the principals of wrap-around, strengths-based approaches, person-centered, trauma informed care, and restorative justice with all services provided to students/families.
  • Reports to supervisor at a minimum each week to review case management and outcomes for each student.
  • Ensure compliance with all pertinent government and agency regulations and operating standards, including maintaining all required documentation and applicable databases.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Required Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred, Associates Degree required.
  • Three – five years’ experience in health, education, substance abuse, juvenile justice, or other related children and family services.
  • Must be able to work independently, be flexible, adapt well to changes, and be a team player by sharing ideas and listening to others and supporting colleagues and co-workers.
  • Ability to follow direction from all agency supervisors, managers and executive leadership.
  • Must have ability to travel to meetings, schools and appointments as needed.
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends as needed.
  • Strong written and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of school districts and children services.
  • Knowledge of community-based agencies that service children and families.
  • Preference given to those who have knowledge/experience of the child welfare and/or juvenile justice system.
  • Past experience with training/facilitating groups (adults and children) – preferred.
